Located in the Santa Creu district, this building dates from the late 18th century, an area when several families built or renovated their houses in a lavish fashion, to match their new social status.
Joan Riusech bought the house in 1740. Before this it belonged to an important 17th century merchant. Its current form dates from the second half of the 18th century when it was, without doubt, the most important house in the whole area. At the end of the 19th century Antoni Marquès i Marquès, who was mayor of Palma in 1884, bought the house and it remained in the hands of his descendants until the present owner bought it fourteen years ago.
The most outstanding feature of Can Marquès is its patio. It is one of the latest creative examples of the 18th century Majorcan patio with its attractive and innovative staircase design which is reversed in comparison with the traditional style. The history of the Palma’s patios dates back to the 13th century with the arrival of the Gothic style, and culminates between the 16th and 18th centuries when the city’s main houses were renovated and, in some cases, rebuilt, in line with the Renaissance and Baroque styles.
A tour around these patios takes us through Palma’s most historically significant streets, many of which bear the names of the important families who lived in them. The interior of the house maintains the classic layout, with the most important rooms surrounding the patio, as well as the high ceilings with wooden beams, which give the interiors of Majorcan mansions a distinctive character, somewhere between lavish and austere.
The current owner has magnificently renovated the house, completing the property with three beautiful terraces – from which you can enjoy views of the sea and the Cathedral – several independent apartments, a large cellar, a lift and several parking spaces.
