Smart cities to improve sustainability and quality of life

This year, the Diaro de Mallorca has organised the Business forum to exchange experiences and opinions about smart, sustainable, and digital cities. According to Emilio Ontiveros, professor of Business Economy, it is important to transform major cities into smart ones in order to improve the quality of life for its inhabitants. It also eases the management of the cities for its governmental authorities.

Some specific examples of what a Smart City can have are the possibility of nearby information in real time about all public services and the layout of urban networks as well as city planning in energy efficiency from beginning to end, including digitally-controlled efficiency, also informing the citizens in real-time.

According to Juan Carlos Lluch, president of Asociación Balear de Corredores de Seguros (the Balear Insurance Agents’ Association), a smart city seeks to discover what is happening in the city, predict what will occur according to historical knowledge, and prescribe certain measures to politicians directed toward improvements in quality of life and better use of resources and budget.
